ITO Shimo (Merino + Silk Yarn)

ITO Shimo (Merino + Silk Yarn)

  • Yarn Notes
  • Yarn Specs
  • The Brand
  • ITO Shimo is a very special merino+silk yarn with a quiet sort of depth and charm.

It is a woollen-spun blend of 80% mulesing-free merino with 20% recycled silk from ITO Kinu. The merino is a very fine 19.5 micron lambswool from Uruguay.

What makes Shimo particularly interesting is how it is spun. It is produced on an old mule spinning system — a traditional method which creates lofty, high quality woollen yarns with added lightness and character.

The fibres are mixed before carding, which gives Shimo its beautifully subtle mélange effect. So rather than a flat, one-dimensional colour, you get shades with movement and depth running all the way through the yarn.

And because it is woollen spun, Shimo has a lovely airy quality and a softly cohesive finish rather than anything dense or overly polished. It feels light in the hand, but knits up warm and characterful.

It is also scoured after spinning and will bloom even more after washing, softening and filling out the fabric beautifully.

We also love the heritage element here. In a world of increasingly uniform yarns, Shimo feels like a yarn with a proper point of view - combining recycled silk, fine lambswool and old spinning technology to produce something that feels both modern and rooted in textile tradition.

The palette is, of course, classic ITO: sophisticated, nuanced and easy to combine across the range.

Shimo is excellent all on its own for lightweight garments and accessories with texture and depth, but it also pairs beautifully with other ITO yarns if you want to play with fabric structure and surface interest.

Here's a page of swatches showing some examples of Kinu and Shimo together.
