Orkney Angora Elsness DK

  • Orkney Angora Elsness DK is a proper little luxury: soft, fluffy, hand-dyed and full of that beautiful, inimitable angora halo.

This yarn blends the finest grade 1 angora with high quality 18.5 micron lambswool, giving you the softness and lustre of angora with a little extra structure from the wool.

It’s a versatile DK (8 ply yarn), suitable for knitting, crochet, appliqué, hand embroidery, needlepoint and other projects. It's perfect for garments as well as accessories like hats and gloves.

Elsness DK was commissioned to replace Orkney Angora’s 100% angora yarns, while still showing off all the finest qualities of angora. It dyes beautifully, with a delightful lustre that really enhances the natural beauty of the fibre.

Also, unlike 100% angora, the addition of lambswool adds a little elasticity (angora has zero elasticity), and makes it easier to tink back when you make a mistake. But at 80% angora, you still get that full-bodied angora hit, that's unmistakeable.

And no nylon or other plastics in this yarn!

Because this is hand-dyed yarn, shade variations can occur between dye batches (as with all hand-dyed yarns).

  • Ingredients:
    80% Angora
    20% Lambswool

    Length:
    Approx. 200m

    Weight:
    50g

    Gauge:
    DK / 8 ply

    20 - 28 sts = 10cm / 4 inches

    3.25 - 4mm needles

  • Orkney Angora is a sustainable, artisan business run by Tracy Ranger from her croft on the beautiful and remote island of Sanday in Orkney.

Tracy washes the natural angora and mohair yarns, dyes them, dries them and winds them all by hand with care and attention to detail. All Orkney Angora yarns are ethically sourced and fully traceable.

And because this is Orkney, there’s wind. Lots of it. Orkney Angora makes use of clean, wind-generated power for business activities including hand dyeing and hank and ball winding.

The business was originally established by William and Elizabeth Sichel in 1982, and Tracy took it over in 2017. It remains a small, personally run operation from her smallholding on Sanday.
